Everyone drops out over the next two or three days. Johnson becomes Tory leader on Friday, Get ready to fight a confidence vote next week.
Then what?
If he wins the first confidence vote - and he's only going to win by a couple of votes . . . Then he's got to go back to Europe to re-open the withdrawal agreement. Obviously, that's what he promised.
And this is something else that hasn't happened before.
Europe won't renegotiate, so the very policy that he won the Tory leadership will have immediately failed.
And here's the thing. He will have boasted himself into a job upon a policy that immediately and publicly fails. And that is a resignation matter.
The public failure of your prime policy. The policy that you destroyed the previous government in order to pursue.
Because this is the situation the Tories are going to elect.
When your prime policy fails - as Johnson's is bound to - then you have to resign.
Elected leader on Friday and have to resign on Monday.
How could Boris Johnson not resign when his renegotiation failed? He'd have to, wouldn't he? After 4 days. Imagine it.
He just forced one prime minister out of her job. Actually two.
Cameron promised a new treaty, failed, Johnson forced him out.
May got a Brexit deal, Johnson voted it down and forced her out.
Then Johnson becomes prime minister promising a new deal . . . ?
As ridiculous as it sounds, I don't see Boris Johnson will have any choice but to resign when he fails to get anything new from Europe.
Boris Johnson becomes prime minister this week, and immediately realises that the only way he's got of keeping the job is to hold another referendum.
If he doesn't it'll be a general election, and he'll lose that.

Every candidate for the leadership is standing on a personal manifesto to renegotiate.
Every candidate is wrong, but you have to elect one of them, and whichever one it is will immediately fail the very policy they were elected to pursue.
To be fair, Piers Morgan did actually confront Sajid Javid with this, that Europe will not renegotiate. But all he got was the same bluff and bluster.
"They always say that. I'm your top negotiator. I know these people. I will negotiate. Blah blah."
If a prime minister is elected in conditions like this, they're not going to last a month.
They will have only been elected by the Tory membership in the first place. Have no national mandate. Have no majority. And immediately fail what they boasted themselves up to get the job.

We're just going to keep going through prime ministers and party leaders until reality begins to penetrate the political conversation of this country.
As it stands every Tory candidate has adopted a posture which is going to fail as soon as it meets reality.
Europe won't renegotiate for any of them, and parliament won't let them leave with nothing, but you just can't get them to acknowledge these facts.
Yes, they are facts. Europe hasn't even got a Commission that can negotiate yet. And it won't have until November, the day after we're meant to leave.
There's no one to negotiate WITH, but still they keep saying it.

A final word on the Kool-Aid mystery from earlier.
First of all Kool-Aid was referred to in a book by Ken kesey about the sixties hippy counter-culture

AND . . .
A different fruit juice was later used at Jonestown where several hundred people used it with poison to committed suicide in a religious or psychotic rapture.
And what seems to have happened is that those two events sort of crossed over with each other, and the hippy counter-culty resonance of Kool-Aid was then transferred onto Jonestown where a different brand of drink had been used.

To understand why, I need to outline 2 important mechanisms that most people, politicians and commentators seem to ignore, dismiss or simply don't get. They have different and somewhat opposite consequences, but are both decisive in the current & foreseeable predicaments.

It is a massive constraint.

UPDATE: The conference committee negotiating a final funding package for the Dept of Homeland Security (DHS) has its first meeting today. Not much will come out of today's meeting, but they must come to an agreement by Fri, 2/8. (More on conference cmtes: indivisible.org/resource/legis…)
There are 3 likely scenarios that will play out over the next week and a half:

#1: A deal w/ additional “border security” funding for Trump’s inhumane policies & agenda, like caging families. It may not have the votes to pass Congress, and we wouldn’t want a bad deal to pass.
Scenario #2: No deal emerges through the conference committee, but a separate effort emerges where Republicans try to use Dreamers as bargaining chips to pay for Trump’s demands for more cages, agents, and the border wall—something that immigration groups broadly oppose.

I've been processing 2018 a lot these past few weeks. More than most years. Actually, feels more like I'm finally batch processing years 2013-2018, since 2013 was the last time I really loved what I was doing and felt a sense of agency about it.
(that was as an engineer at Parse, pre-acquisition, for those of you trying to do the math)

FB was a soul killer. I stuck it out for the money, the experience, the pedigree, most of all the team. I don't regret it and it was the right thing to do,
but when it ended (and it ended horribly) I was...not in a good space.

Part of the reason I did a startup was because I was so desperate to put my headphones on for a year or three and write code and make things and *heal*.

Ignore the polls and get out there and #Vote on November 6th. Relying on polling is a relic of a time gone by.
I’m not saying looking at @FiveThirtyEight’s model and charts and stuff isn’t cool, because it is and provides some insight. But no matter what the numbers say, it’s most certainly NEVER an excuse to not #Vote because you feel your peeps are a “lock”
Need nothing further than to point to 2016. Which by the way, @FiveThirtyEight didn’t really have wrong, but the “selected not elected” mindset existed before 2016. Why else would over 100 million people choose NOT to participate in their civic duty to choose their leaders.
