A formative experience for me was watching a whole bunch of people with lots of authority and pedigrees support an Iraq war that seemed to me, as a 23 year old without expertise, completely insane and criminal.
And not just that! But watching a political conventional wisdom form that *of course* supporting this insane, criminal enterprise was the smart thing to do.
This was repeated a bit during the run-up to the Great Recession, when it seemed very clear to me, as a 28 year old reporter, that the housing crash was going to bring with enormous destruction

So anytime I see people in power saying "Don't worry, we got this," I worry. Doesn't mean I'm right! But that's my instinct and it's pretty well earned.
And I think this is shared by a lot of people who's formative years happened during this long period of elite failure.
