I kinda wonder if the rise of podcasts is just a symptom of our mental health crisis and the prevalance of loneliness.
Hear me out...
Podcasts replicate the soothing feeling of talking with a close friend -- relationships many find frey with time -- without the pesky chore of actually having to help or be there for them. They give relief from loneliness even when we're exhausted...so perfect for commutes!
Podcasts also let us hear voices in our head without being "crazy". Talk radio has been popular for decades with conservatives that tend to be more homogeneous so broadcast radio works. Now heterogenous liberals are tuning into podcasts because they can sort into their niches.
But mostly, we love podcasts because we don't want brain silence...which forces us to think & reflect often in negative spirals in this era of anxiety from busyness & 24/7 news. Even if we're learning from podcasts, we get to shut off our inner monologue!
Binge listening to great storytelling or education podcasts is fine, but maybe call a friend on your commute and chat sometime. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk, which you also watch so you don't have to think 🙃

4th of July makes the think of food and how everything I ate as a kid was basically poison. Bless mum’s heart but...
What I was fed I now see as child endangerment:
-Cereal, OJ
-Sandwiches, school lunch garbage
-Afternoon cookies & bagels
-Pasta or rice every dinner
-McD’s & Taco Bell for treats
—Surprise! I got tubbby
I lost 30lbs in a year just not eating every visible carb & sweet, but pizza & ice cream still. That convinces me I could have done this as a kid and still been happy.

Top takeaways from my video+gaming panel at #AllThingsRTC:
-Video chat can 4X usage & 2X retention for games
-Streaming is evolving from Twitch to narrowcasting to friends & live synchronous play
-Gamers need their own social networks or non-gamers get annoyed like Zynga+Fb
Video chat massively ups risk of abuse in games, including bullying of ‘default’ users who haven’t bought/earned fancy skins. Developers should look to safety-as-a-service providers like @TwoHatHQ & @AntiToxinTech
The social+gaming industry loves the validation of Epic/Fortnite acquiring Houseparty, even if it wasn’t a big financial win. It’ll make it easy to squad up before play. Thx to our panelists & attendees!

1/ It has been exactly one year since I lost my dad. The events that led up to his death are dark, but I think it is important to share what and why it happened as Let me start by introducing my dad...
2/ He was a hard-working, honorable, loving, thoughtful human being. He served several years in the US Army as a medic, but was luckily never sent to Vietnam. He built his career in clothing manufacturing - something his father & mother had done before him.
3/ My dad was always the life of the party. He would travel regularly to Asia and the Middle East and would always come back with gifts and stories. He was my biggest supporter and we spoke nearly every day about politics, work, and life. Family meant EVERYTHING to him.

Okay #NeurodiverseSquad I'm going to thread about GETTING OUT OF A FUNK because that's what I'm doing right now and I've done it heaps and got real good at it. HMU with your questions or thoughts my DMs are open if you're shy.
So here's a thing. a lot of us have internalised the idea that we are lazy and that we need to push and push and push ourselves to overcome our innate laziness. So after a crisis or a funk or a setback we can get SUPER judgemental about getting back on track.
But let me tell you a secret: you're not lazy my beautiful #neurodiversesquad! It's okay to to just give yourself a little gentle push to start off with! Do some warm ups! Work back up to it! You don't need to go from "GIVE UP INTERNET FOREVER FUNK/CRISIS MODE" to "EVERYTHING!!!"

THREAD: Working class people who vote Tory. A handful of people pulled me up on my lampooning those who do the other day - so never one to avoid detail, this, my friends, is how I see it.
In 2002, I spent a month in different parts of the US. Not the usual tourist spots either. I was visiting friends, and greyhounded my way to, amongst other places, Syracuse, NY and Burlington, VT.
Let's take the latter first. Burlington, some of its residents proudly told me, was the most socialist city in the US. Yet it was full of wealth - and those who could afford to live there were mostly upper middle class. This seemed, well, kinda odd.
