A few quick thoughts on the rapidly escalating crisis we're seeing with #Iran. Many of us have been warning since day 1 about the recklessness of Donald Trump. Since they joined the Admin, we've been warning about the lust for war with Iran from Pompeo and Bolton. 1/
THIS right here is why we have been saying that. Trump walked into office with no crisis. He inherited a functioning nuclear deal that was working as advertised. Yes, there were other concerns, but we have concerns with nearly every country, and were not in crisis w/ Iran. 2/
Through utter recklessness and a blind obsession with doing the opposite of whatever @BarackObama did, Trump has systematically surrounded himself with warmongers like Pompeo and Bolton while taking step after step after step down the path of conflict and war. 3/
Now we find ourselves on the brink of a disaster as stupid, avoidable, and destructive as Iraq. Trump, who has no real goal with Iran, has few "offramps" but that doesn't mean we have to keep racing towards war. The guy who ran on ending wars needs to simply not start one. 4/
A good first step would be firing Bolton. We should also find some way of talking to the Iranians, including welcoming the help of a world Trump has largely done his best to piss off. Congress should make clear there is ZERO authority for a war. 5/
And the public should make clear that we've learned from our disastrous history of endless war in the Middle East and won't take the bait to end up in another one. Now is a time for calmer heads to prevail and for the public to demand peace. Let's make it happen. 6/6
