Uber is a tinder box. I spent almost 2 hrs yesterday in a big LA Uber Hub. I saw driver after driver dealing with being deactivated, some with some very very sad stories, & the customer service specialists really doing nothing for them. /1
One driver asked to talk with a manager and was refused. As he was pleading his case, 4000+ rides, he was actually told by the Uber employee behind the desk, "There's over 100,000 other drivers out there. You're one less. Nothing I can do." /2
Another driver broke my heart. He told me he started driving 2 months ago. Quit his job, bought a new car, $425/month payment, was thinking he was going to make better pay to take care of his family better. He was about 9 rides away from a big bonus. Uber deactivated him. /3
Why? His rating was 4.95 (very high!). He had a whole bunch of complements from passengers in the app: "Best driver ever!" "Best customer service hands down!" He had 2 bad passengers- one dropped food all over his car, another damaged his trunk with his suitcase. /4
The sloppy food dropper complained to Uber about him, and the damage to the trunk was $900. Uber's response? You're deactivated. The guy was almost in tears - had me almost in tears - how is he going to pay his car payment? /5
We drivers have zero rights. Zero. Uber/Lyfts' idea to start a driver association is going to do nothing for us. The culture of these co's is that we don't matter, that we are junk, replaceable, & deserve nothing. We have to fight together to win this. /6
We need basic rights that all employees have: to never earn less than min wage, free medical care if injured on the job, unemployment if we lose our jobs. Better yet we need our own union & the right to fight for & win our own legally binding contract with these employers. /7
#yesonAB5 is a move in the right direction. Think of the young father who just got deactivated from Uber, with a car note, and no one to turn to. Think of drivers' pay going lower & lower. Uber & Lyft - it's a tinder box for drivers right now. @_drivers_united @CaliforniaLabor /8
