THE ART OF (TUG OF) WAR

life is a constant push and pull

reactions, equal and opposite, are woven into the fabric of our universe

to embrace tension it is to embrace life itself

as individuals, we are full of contradictions

we feel things, we think things, we balance and attempt to do our best

but we are inevitably skewed in one direction or another

internally, we deal with this push and pull

we process pros and cons

our internal monologue, ripping through arguments at 1,000 miles an hour

as we search for the right answer

i visualize it as a game of tug of war

we play this game with ourselves, attempting to find balance, to be centered, to be well

that game is hard

it takes a huge amount of effort to pull on both sides and maintain the center

it's a constant back and forth

too much in this direction

course correction

too much in that direction

course correction

too much in this direction again

the magic of teamwork is the externalization of this tug of war

i can bring my skewed personality, and you can bring yours

two (or more) can play this game

in this tug of war, my individual weaknesses can become strengths of the team

my tendency towards being a hoarder can become a voice that helps us make sound financial decisions

my melodramatic bent can become a force for empathy instead of a constant internal storm

but tug of war is always hard

it takes constant effort to keep the rope in tension

it takes intent to remember that the goal isn't to win, but to play the game

the art of (tug of) war is to find balance in the midst of tension

it's believing in the future when it would be easier to let the rope go

it's building something beautiful as we disagree

it's when our whole is greater than the sum of our parts
