For some strange reason, they seem to believe that Congress—even if presented with blatant flaunting of contempt, and clear and obvious corruption—will not exercise its power to defend its constitutional authority.
This is the most exhausting take.

The likelihood the Senate will not do its job is not a reason to not do your job. Make them not do their job. Make them be seen not doing it. Don't not do their job for them. Don't normalize crime and corruption.
What the House can do is its Constitutional duty.

Telling the truth is worth doing even if it's unlikely to be believed.

Doing what's right is an end in itself.

Capitulation before the fact is what corrupt power wants. We should be absolutely opposed to giving it to them.

Watching the Epstein story unfold, you’d almost think our entire society is based on knowing enablement of the violent abuse of marginalized people—mostly young, mostly of color, mostly women, mostly poor—by powerful people—mostly older, mostly white, mostly men, mostly rich.
It might almost start to seem that wealth, maleness, whiteness, and age, are instinctively seen as presumed moral value, presumed innocence, presumed ownership—and that poverty, femaleness, color, and youth are seen as presumed moral lack, presumed guilt, presumed property.
It might seem as if acceptance of these assumptions are so instinctive, the existence of a Jeffery Epstein, who procured weaker human beings for consumption by stronger ones, would seem not an aberration but rather an inevitability

Fun fact: 50 years ago when much of the US border control/immigration laws/infrastructure/agencies were set up, guess what we didn't have?

Fun fact: Thirteen years ago I stood in the Illini Union, not far from the site of today’s speech, to hear freshman Senator Barack Obama speak while Senator Durbin fielded questions from those in the small crowd. It was obvious then that Obama was meant for bigger things.
I felt like Durbin and Obama were my Senators, looking out for my interests. Although I live in North Carolina now, I still feel that Durbin has my back.

When Thom Tillis visited my workplace early on in his first year in the Senate, I didn’t even get up from my desk.
No real reason to write this, except maybe for a longing for the days when many of us felt there was a huge possibility that America would shift from the horror (remember that?) of the George W. Bush years.

Now, I’m genuinely fearful.

Fun fact: when I was a Never Trumper during the 2016 primary season, I got into long arguments with alt right white power Trump 'supporters' with things in their bios like "Volunteer Member /Trump Deportation Force"
These people would actually SHARE fantasies with me about hoping to see kids who grew up in the US dumped at the Mexican border.

I would actually end up having to explain TRUMP'S OWN IMMIGRATION REFORM PLAN to them.

Now look where we are a year and a half later.
Immigration reform bill is in the works, and once again, this time as a pro-Trump pundit, I'm STILL having to explain his actual immigration plan to people who claim they are his supporters.
