Fun fact: Thirteen years ago I stood in the Illini Union, not far from the site of today’s speech, to hear freshman Senator Barack Obama speak while Senator Durbin fielded questions from those in the small crowd. It was obvious then that Obama was meant for bigger things.
I felt like Durbin and Obama were my Senators, looking out for my interests. Although I live in North Carolina now, I still feel that Durbin has my back.

When Thom Tillis visited my workplace early on in his first year in the Senate, I didn’t even get up from my desk.
No real reason to write this, except maybe for a longing for the days when many of us felt there was a huge possibility that America would shift from the horror (remember that?) of the George W. Bush years.

Now, I’m genuinely fearful.
I’m fearful of the direction the Supreme Court will take civil rights, women’s rights, hell—human rights in general—with Kavanaugh. Healthcare, Social Security, public education—the Federalist Society agenda will be applied in every ruling regarding anything good...
...and it will happen more quickly than most can imagine.

And when we get this back, every Republican and Democrat who voted to confirm Kavanaugh will be held accountable for their greed and their cowardice when faced with their Constitutional responsibilities.
I don’t feel defeated, and I don’t feel that all the other horrible things occurring throughout each day are negated at all by Kavanaugh’s appointment, but I do believe that Kavanaugh’s appointment will exacerbate every horrible thing that made today’s horrible things possible.
With all that’s going on, it’s easy to forget one very simple truth:

We are the majority.

And when we get through this, we’ll treat all Americans—complicit Members of Congress and members of this destructive, anti-American administration excepted—with compassion and dignity.
