THREAD: Thousands of people are being jailed by @DHSgov in camps and detention centers. Conditions in these facilities are grotesque.

In the past few weeks we’ve learned that the illness, hunger, and trauma that take place within are more widespread than previously known.

With the funding Congress has allocated, DHS continues to expand its incarceration of immigrants rather than improve conditions for those already in detention.

It’s clear immigration authorities are more interested in jailing migrants than caring for them.

TODAY Congress will consider 2 amendments put forth by @AOC to the National Defense Authorization Act that would ban troops from being deployed at the border and prevent the use of Department of Defense facilities for warehousing people who are seeking home and safety in the U.S.

We are supporting both amendments & urge other members in the House to vote YES.

These amendments are not the entire solution to the inhumane treatment of migrants at the border, but will begin to curtail the increasing militarization & criminalization of our immigration system.

Those arriving at our borders deserve dignity and respect, not the inside of a jail.

Soldiers should not be used against asylum-seekers, and jails should not be built to house those fleeing violence.
