As if what we really need in this moment is more White men who wouldn’t be where they are today without racism pretending they get to referee the definition and confrontation of racism. 😒
Y’all can go ahead and stop imploring Republicans to denounce the racism they voted for, they’ve officially launched the inevitable “this isn’t actually racism” portion of their programming. Stop fishing for cover on their behalf, they don’t want your rehabilitation by proxy.
Seriously the issue at hand isn’t that the @GOP is unapologetically racist, it’s that their racism has been obfuscated and mainstreamed for 50+ years to the extent that folk are still asking if they condone racism with a straight face even after they nominated/elected KKK Trump.
The GOP’s silence on Trump’s habitual racism wouldn’t be so deafening to so many people if they hadn’t been deluding themselves that small government, fetuses and tax breaks are the “only” reasons their White friends/family keep voting for apartheid.
If you truly expect the establishment GOP to denounce racism and White Nationalism when fomenting both is literally how they win elections, you’re either ignorant of US history or desperately trying to cover your own ass b/c you’ve wrongly thought better of them all this time.
Also for the umpteenth time, Trump’s racism isn’t a tactical distraction, it’s the @GOP’s MAIN ATTRACTION.
While y’all are convincing yourselves that Trump’s “just being racist to distract from Epstein” the Republican base knew he was both a racist & sexual predator when they voted for him and found it charming. He doesn’t need or want distractions from shit he knows the GOP accepts.
Frankly I just don’t buy the idea that a sociopath who’s evaded legal consequences for numerous crimes his entire life and successfully stolen the US presidency that’s literally shielding him from indictment feels obligated to “deflect to racism” to briefly change the subject.
The subject is very much still that we have concentration camps at the border because White Americans elected a White supremacist in 2016. Epstein could very well be considered a distraction from that given the fact that brown ppl are dying at the border because of GOP racism.
I understand that folk are hungry for any morsel of damning evidence that will suddenly rid us all of Trump for good, but the shit he’s still getting away with along the way is racist, heinous and being sanctioned by the GOP & White “moderates” of all political stripes who DGAF.
It takes more than two hands to count the number of women who’ve accused Trump of sexual assault and we’ve all known this since the campaign. None of it has mattered to the White majority because his racism has always been on point, it’s literally rendered him unimpeachable.
Republicans gleefully put Kavanaugh on SCOTUS and they had absolutely no problem with Acosta at Labor despite his Epstein history. They DGAF about Gym Jordan. They don’t care that Trump’s a sexual predator either. As long as he’s racist he satisfies the GOP base, it’s Teflon.
Folk are mad at Nancy but the reality is even after 2 years of this disaster Democrats don’t have anywhere near the necessary votes for impeachment because they’re afraid of backlash from White ppl in their districts who still don’t think he’s done anything wrong “yet”.
He’s already done ALL the shits, y’all. They just don’t fucking care.
Period.
Beyond that, we’ve already succumbed to the fucked up precedent of “a sitting president can’t be indicted” so I’m not even sure why Trump would bother distracting his own self from a self-soothing tantrum with allegations he’s been assured he won’t have to provide a defense for.
Trump’s been awarded the freest of free passes in the WH, he isn’t scared of consequences and doesn’t even know what they feel like. He hasn’t been held accountable because he’s still fighting to make America White again, this is why they’re either redefining racism or silent rn.
This dynamic is reinforced by the very idea that the spectacle of anyone attempting to hold Trump accountable for anything will spark an insurmountable backlash from White people who don’t think he’s done anything wrong “yet” and therefore = bad politics.
Little attention is paid to the pathological reasons why said White ppl don’t see anything wrong “yet”, it’s an afterthought and according to some also a distraction even though it’s the most readily identifiable barrier to moving White public opinion on Trump, the GOP and race.
Epstein won’t matter to them bc kids in cages don’t matter to them and their admiration of his bigotry/misogyny/sociopathy grows no matter how many new scandals happen along the way. Every new allegation and the retaliatory tweets attached endear them further. #AmericanSociopath
Republicans won’t denounce any of this shit because it means simultaneously denouncing their constituents. They’re sticking with the folk who brought them to the dance because it’s politically expedient to do so, that shouldn’t be hard to understand by now.
These people literally believe that a White God plucked Trump from his lavish life of white collar crime to save White America from non-White people with a wall and concentration camps, there is no scandal scandalous enough to back them off of the cliff. They’ve already jumped.
Until their corporate donors get tired of subsidizing racism and misogyny for profit or their voters stop being willing to enable sociopathy and fascism, the GOP’s gonna stick to the same hateful program that’s been winning them White votes for 50+ years. #SilenceIsCompliance
Believe them when they habitually show you who they are. Serial perpetrators rarely (if ever) feel obligated to define or prosecute their own misdeeds.
The implication that Democrats are making an egregious mistake and unwittingly falling into a clever trap for unequivocally denouncing the racism the GOP’s been legislating and fomenting to win White votes for 50+ years is PRECISELY how we ended up here.
The White punditry in general constantly tries to neuter conversations about racism b/c they know deep down that the majority of White voters immediately stop listening when the words “race” and “racism” are mentioned. Privilege means it always feels like a needless distraction.
This has also been the crux of the class v. race dichotomy in liberal politics over the last 50+ yrs, the idea that populist economic policy alone (without mention of the racism that impedes it) is enough to make White voters comfortable enough to vote D.
What’s usually missing from this analysis is the fact of reality that non-White voters and reliable White allies actually do care to discuss race and racism and don’t see them as distractions b/c they’re literally the main impediments to social AND economic justice in US policy.
It is and always has been a White privilege to not be impacted by the institutionalized detriment of racism to the extent that discussing it and formulating a plan to fight it with anti-racist votes and policy feels like a needless distraction and falling into a trap.
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen White people on here tell other White people who are RTing my tweets “she talks about race too much” or how many White people have explicitly told me they were unfollowing me for the same reason (as if I actually wanted them in my TL 🙄).
Or how many times IRL I’ve heard White people resort to “can’t we all just get along” and demur from political conversations b/c the topic shifted to race and the kitchen got too fucking hot for them to stay in it. Ain’t shit changed b/c they won’t even discuss/consider changing.
We’ve certainly come to expect such a defensiveness from card carrying Republicans but a lot of folk still aren’t ready to tackle the denial/fragility that’s also lurking under the surface with White “moderates” and liberals. Moments like this expose it all, for better or worse.
Bottom line is folk who don’t even care about racism as an issue in general aren’t capable of defining it accurately and damn sure shouldn’t be the arbiters of the discussion. Their stewardship always results in enabling White supremacy and further maintenance of the status quo.
