Difference between BXP and LibDems important here - voters who think their challenger party is going to win will be harder for the leading parties to squeeze
If memory serves, a lot of UKIP voters expressed similar confidence in their party's prospects ahead of the 2015 election, and there's quite a lot of overlap between UKIP then and BXP now.
So this pattern of effects might reflect a generally high partisan optimism/lack of understanding of the electoral system among the kind of voters who back radical right/populist/anti-system options like UKIP & BXP
