I just spoke to Con Ed's president about tonight's outages. Their system in parts of Brooklyn is under severe strain and some equipment has failed.
Here’s where we stand: Con Ed is taking 30K customers in Brooklyn, including Carnarsie, Mill Basin and Flatbush, temporarily off power so it can make repairs and prevent a bigger outage.
.@NYPDnews, @FDNY and @NYCEmergencyMgt are all adding personnel on the ground across that part of Brooklyn to respond to emergencies and keep people safe.
.@NYCEmergencyMgt is setting up a command post in the affected area and has personnel at each of the nursing homes and adult care facilities so we can respond quickly to meet any needs.
City agencies are working with Con Ed to resolve this as quickly as possible. In the event of an emergency, contact 911. Follow @NotifyNYC for updates on restorations.
Update on affected senior facilities:
There is one nursing home that is on generator power and 2 adult care facilities without power. @nycemergencymgt has dispatched a cooling bus and has personnel on scene. EMS is alerted and ready for any emergencies.
It’s still above 90 and I know there are a lot of hot and frustrated people out there, not just in Brooklyn but in parts of Queens and the Bronx.

Con Ed is working to restore power and City agencies are working to help speed up restoration in every way we can.
We’ll keep everyone updated — follow @NotifyNYC for up to the minute information.
Latest from Con Ed for the 30K customers without power in Flatlands, Canarsie, Mill Basin and Bergen Beach: Con Ed will start bringing customers back 500 at a time around midnight.
That’s going to be a slow process so they don’t overload the system. We’ll update on progress as we get more info.
Con Ed is responding to other significant outages besides the biggest in southeast Brooklyn.

They’ve begun restoring Bath Beach and Gravesend and expect to have the rest restored by 11 PM.
Con Ed crews and @NYCEmergencyMgt are also responding to more than 8K customers without power in Jamaica.
Here’s the latest from the @NYCEmergencyMgt command post in Mill Basin:

More light towers are on the way to keep streets lit and provide visibility.

The NYPD has also moved additional personnel into the area to manage traffic and keep streets safe.
4 schools in the affected area will not be open tomorrow: K078, K207, K068 and K276.

Follow @NYCSchools for updates on alternate programming.
1 of the 2 senior facilities affected by outage has power back. Generators are on way to the other.

Air conditioned buses are stationed outside for seniors to stay comfortable.

FDNY and EMS are checking in on residents across the area who rely on medical equipment.
Con Ed reporting roughly 10,000 customers in the large Brooklyn outage restored so far.
Here's the latest briefing from @NYCEmergencyMgt:

The strain on the power grid will go down in the overnight hours, which will help Con Ed make restorations.
.@NYCEmergencyMgt and the Red Cross have opened a temporary shelter at JHS 278 in Marine Park.
Light towers are being installed at the 2 L train stations that have active train service but no lights.
Con Ed and @NYCEmergencyMgt are continuing to respond to the Jamaica outage as well, which has affected buildings at South Jamaica Houses.

It's still hot and people have a right to be frustrated. We're pushing Con Ed to get power back as fast as possible.
Reminder: continue to follow @NotifyNYC for real time updates.
Here’s the latest update from @NYCEmergencyMgt command: Con Ed reports that they’ve restored grid power to seven buildings in NYCHA South Jamaica Houses as well as most customers who lost power around Jamaica.
After overnight restorations, Con Ed still has 14,700 customers without power in Brooklyn.
We’ve brought more than half of the traffic signals back online the Flatlands-Mill Basin-Canarsie area. NYPD has been bringing in additional personnel to support areas still without power to direct traffic.
EMS is regularly checking in on seniors and other vulnerable populations in the areas where there’s still no power.

@NYCEmergencyMgt’s command post will remain on the ground this morning.

Please continue to monitor @NotifyNYC for real time updates.
.@NYCEmergencyMgt, @FDNY and @NYPDNews remain on the ground across Canarsie, Mill Basin, Flatlands and Bergen Beach. Con Ed’s latest report indicates about 9,000 customers still without power there— and 4,000 more across the city.
We’re pushing Con Ed to move as quickly as possible to restore power, and City agencies are focused on keeping EVERYONE at home and on the streets safe.
For the thousands of New Yorkers still without power after more than 18 hours, this is beyond frustrating.

They want power back and they want answers from Con Ed.

This was a situation we all saw coming. We need to know why Con Ed failed to prevent it.
