I’m a registered Independent (I am way to the left of most US politicians) but this is noteworthy: holding white men accountable is considered “impolite.” Incredible. As I say in the chapter in my new book on the importance of profanity & this obsession w/civility: fuck that
Fuck this obsession with civility and politeness. It is instructive that in the era of Trump — a man who has torpedoed the notion of civility — women are still expected to be polite and demure. I wrote this - and expanded it into a chapter in my new book google.com/amp/s/www.nbcn…
Patriarchy - and attendant oppressions such as racism, capitalism, bigotry, etc - wants us to forever remain within the straitjacket of niceness and politeness, despite the violence it subjects us to.
You can hear me say “fuck that” and many iterations in the audiobook of The Seven Necessary Sins For Women and Girls, which I just recorded for @BeaconPressBks.
For example 👇🏽
In the chapter on Profanity, I give as an example the history of “radical rudeness” in #Uganda, used against British colonizers, and I write extensively about Dr. Stella Nyanzi who is maintaining that today against dictator Museveni & his regime. She is on trial at the moment
In the chapter on Profanity, I write about “radical rudeness,” which anti-colonial activists in Uganda used to disrupt colonial power which “was encoded in manners, politeness, and conventional rituals of sociability.” I quite from here 👇🏽 jstor.org/stable/3790288…
Chew on that: in 1940s colonial Uganda and in 2019 USA, it is considered impolite and rude to hold white men accountable for racism. #RadicalRudeness #7NecessarySins
