X: I want to reduce my intake of animal products. Can recommend a good vegan cookbook?
TF: Typically I just look up specific recipes as vegan, or learn them from others. I have also used supercook.com before to make recipes with the ingredients I have.

I know a lot of people really like the Veganomicon. It's not on there but I've used Vegan on the Cheap before.

TF: First priority is getting comfortable with daily fare. You also need to take into account nutrition (although not as hard as some say) - the book Reddit recommends, Vegan for Life by Jack Norris and Virginia Messina, is a good intro.
TF: After you can do daily fare I highly recommend Skye Michael Conroy's specialized cookbook for making cheese. It requires special ingredients and a little investment in time to learn how to make cheeses but most recipes are not that hard. And they are easily the best cheeses
TF: He has other cookbooks for meat, fish, eggs, and other stuff too but haven't tried cooking them myself as cheese is the main thing I missed

for the last 6+ months, we've been running a "Strategy Club", a long-running Anti-Book Club (via @fortelabs) with a focus on a) learning + applying strategy and b) increasing the number and depth of connections between monastics and lay people. here's an excerpt from our charter:

recently, twitter lists have helped me to level up my twitter curation skills. it took me a weirdly long time to
a) find twitter lists in the interface
b) learn/decide how to make effective use of them

this thread has some learnings + best practices.
my current m.o. is that follows are cheap, so I follow someone if I'm even slightly interested in them - but I try to be thoughtful about which lists I create and who/how I add to them
for me lists are only tenable for everyday usage because I use tweetdeck at least part of the time. tweetdeck lets you view multilpe streams/feeds based on different inputs (such as a list).

as you may know, i'm big on alliances. here's a smattering what i've learned from a variety of theoretical reading + my own application and practice.

make use of empire theory + burja maps. As @SamoBurja says in Great Founder Theory: “The best way to win at adversarial encounters... is to focus energy on building out cooperative ones. In the long run, acquiring power and empowering others is mutually reinforcing...”
if you are wanting to collaborate with another organization, know that you are "out". their leader/s is/are "high." there is usually a live mid player to ally with. they have a mix of borrowed + owned power, + are looking for new opportunites + inputs.

Education is key, start with watching vegan health & animal agriculture documentaries.

Try the various vegan meat & dairy alternatives supermarkets have to offer.

Transition slowly by having 1 vegan meal a day, then 2 then all 3.

Quick transitions try Veganuary or Challenge22.
Calcium isn't an issue whilst vegan, you can get plenty by drinking 1-2 cups of fortified plant milk daily, also by eating plenty of leafy greens, beans, seeds, and tofu.
Remember to supplement Vitamin D especially in winter months, to ensure adequate adsorption of calcium.

You need to make 2 decisions: how often should I eat any fries; and how many fries should I eat in a serving?
To help you live your best life (ie eating max safe # of fries), researchers need to ask a pair of causal questions:

•what is the best frequency of French fry consumption to prevent heart attacks?
•what is the best serving size of French fries to prevent heart attacks?

So I want to talk about the whole the whole “VEGAN DIETS ARE ACTUALLY AFFORDABLE” thing bc it’s a little more complicated than I feel I’ve seen people allow. (LONG THREAD)
In terms of when you are able and going to the grocery story and acquiring food, it is absolutely cheaper to omit meat, dairy, frozen foods and specialty items, and you should reduce your consumption of those products-but that includes the vegan versions of that, too.
Lots of American/Western vegans just switch their diet to the Americanized version of what they eat already and it is all processed and still expensive. People see that and they’re not convinced to let go of what is either equal in price or yes, cheaper.

As a relatively new convert to being a plant-based eater (aka a #vegan) I'll admit I've been dragging my feet in the final step of conversion - vegan wines and beer. But I'm now only buying wines that don't use animal products.
This led to my first interesting encounter with a Sommelier this weekend. It was a BYOB affair with no corkage fee (nice!). On short notice the only vegan wine I could find was a Kaiken Malbec. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, ...
... but the restaurant featured Italian cooking with chefs and staff from Italy, including the above mentioned Sommelier. He tried his best to be polite, but I could tell he was offended I brought an Argentinian wine into his establishment.
