Truly fantastic piece @zackkanter -thank you for putting it out.
Loved:
-similarities and differences w/ Walmart
-importance of external customers for all products
-criticism of ranking algo and ads
IMO the ads point is particularly powerful when considering consumer tastes are proliferating and the ads issue gives the power to those brands which are great at advertising (tends to be largest ones).
In an era where they should own the macro trend towards small brands, Amazon's ads are hurting themselves and the consumer. It is reversing the clock on the offline trend of moving away from slotting (slotting makes life harder for smaller brands).
Also loved the suggestion to limit reviews to just last [6] months: "competing against 5 years of accumulated reviews, a new entrant would only need to compete against the most recent ones that were given over the past six months."

A friend just shared a deck on DTC CPG brand. Spending 60% of their round on marketing.
My response unedited:

"So much $ on marketing & branding. That’s what we keep seeing over and over again. Tech VCs funding marketing/branding of products that haven’t hit...
...Skinny Pop raised $500k to get to $80m in revenue. Halo Top raised $1.5m to get to $400m in revenue. RXBar raised $10k before $100m in revenue and $600m sale. Anastasia raised <$5m before $Xb sale to TPG. etc etc etc....
..CGP companies are absolute machines when they see product market fit. The right team focuses on that- not on planning PR for a product that doesn’t exist."

1/ Was recently talking to a founder and she asked what we do to attract & retain talent. It was purposefully broad.

These were my thoughts.

To be clear we have a ton to learn. We have made lots of mistakes and iterated on our process too many times to count.
2/ “If you don’t know where you’re going, you won’t get there”.
I have found that the best at attracting & retaining talent are great at 1st defining where they are trying to go. That means org structure along w/ cultural elements like mission & values.

3/ Mission- It is the DNA of the company. IMO this should change the least (if at all). Ours is written on the walls in office. It has never changed and I have found it to be helpful in attracting & retaining people that believe in that mission.

Meaning it is self-fulfilling.

1/ For most of my adult life I have heard people in consumer complain about retailer bad behavior. CPG brands big and small, investors, etc. Not sure if illuminating bad behavior- by naming names- will help stop it. But I am confident it will lose me some friends.

2/ I reached out to a group of entrepreneurs to get thoughts. Quotes are real & unedited other than to protect anonymity. For those new to the industry I will define terms. Represents variety of of consumer categories.

Not just a complain-sesh. I’ll try to be productive.
3/ First - the general sentiment among entrepreneurs is undeniable:
“These big retailers squeeze small companies for margin and give hidden fees etc. that aren't in any contracts and little guys like us have no clout to be able to fight back”

.@MomsDemand volunteers have been asking #Walmart to block open carry in its stores since the 2014 shooting death of John Crawford III in an Ohio Walmart. Crawford was shot while holding a BB gun, even though openly carrying any type of gun was allowed in Walmart.
This is not the first time #Walmart has done the right thing on gun safety. In 2015, they stoppped selling semiautomatic rifles. In 2018, Walmart agreed to no longer sell firearms to customers under 21 years of age.
In 2008, Walmart worked with @Everytown to adopt a “Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership.” They now go beyond what federal law requires for gun sellers, by taking additional steps such as closing the Charleston Loophole in its stores and videotaping all firearm transactions.

When I reported in Russia, I saw how an unexamined history of murder and terror shaped the country and its politics every day. It made me proud to have left that country to become the citizen of a country that at least tries to look its history in the eye and grapple with it. 1/
It made me realize that, though it doesn't erase a country's sins, the act of looking at them honestly and unflinchingly, of at least trying to address and right history's wrongs, of constantly measuring the reality of your country against its stated ideals... 2/
...is the most patriotic thing you could do.

Kudos to @NYTmag, @nhannahjones, and everyone who worked on the #1619Project. It is an act of utmost patriotism (and the very best kind of journalism). Thank you for putting it out into the world. /fin

3/ There are so many crazy details and rabbit holes to look into when writing about Philip Morris. Going in I knew cigarette companies were shady and they kill people but somehow it was so much worse.

But you're hear to know why @VICE would partner with Big Tobacco...

Walmart insists you show a receipt. They can’t do that. 1) you didn’t sign a membership agreement (aka Costco) and 2) once you buy a product, they’re searching your property. You have the right to refuse. @Walmart any comments on how your worker treated my mother?
2) She behaves differently pre-recording. My mother had to go into Walmart for a can of paint (we avoid at all costs) and she insinuated my mother was stealing when she said “no” to the receipt check. She threatened to call a manager.
(3) the manager arrived. Allowed her to belittle the customer and speak in a patronizing tone. She then doesn’t like hearing the word “sh*t”? Please 🙄 #walmart #KnowYourRights #Shopping #CustomerService
