Boris Johnson is perpetuating a massive con by saying the UK will never put physical infrastructure on the Irish border, because that means we will automatically be in breach of our obligations in a no deal scenario. Basically he's daring Ireland and the EU to be the bad guys.
Because make no mistake about it, if we end up with a border with an EU country on one side and a non-EU country on the other, both with different rules and regulations and tariff regimes, something will need to be established to distinguish them clearly.
What he's trying to do is like saying "we will never build a lock" on a canal where there's a difference in water level to overcome. You can't just ignore the differential, so if not us then someone else will have to take the lead instead. And BJ can point the finger at them.
