If we weren't already members of the EU, we might take a long, hard look at it before joining, and conclude we would be better off striking our own trade deals. Unlikely but possible.

But we're not starting from scratch. We're already members. And Brexit means giving up so much!
It's as if, 20 miles into a marathon, a treacherous thought surfaces: "You know what, we should have worn the other pair of shoes". On impulse, we go all the way back to the start to swap them.

There's no way to get ahead in that situation. Because nobody else will stop running.
This is the thing Brexiters never admit. They talk endlessly about all the new trade deals we could do, and the opportunities that might open up. But they never acknowledge the Mt Everest of trade deals and opportunities we're surrendering overnight to unlock that potential.
