Last night, the Leg broke for August with no #FBRC bill. @massgovernor defended it, saying ppl don't give credit for “how difficult it is to change that formula.” I was also characterized as criticizing my colleagues for delay.

So I want to be clear.

@MassGovernor It is a hard political exercise to change the #MAEdu Foundation Formula—no question.

Just like it’s hard to forge multiple years’ worth of academic gains for a low-income 3rd grader in one school year, when she started far behind her peers.
@MassGovernor And just like it’s hard to get a 10th grader who’s lost 2 friends to street violence to focus on the quadratic equation when he’s struggling with major trauma.

But these are things we rightly ask our schools to do – even though they’re hard.
@MassGovernor And at end of school yr we bottom-line evaluate them on their progress toward these goals. A critical eval doesn’t mean the educators don’t care, or they don’t have “will,” or they aren’t working hard.

But, for the good of kids, we also ask the hard question: Did it get done?
@MassGovernor Accountability is for everyone.
@MassGovernor I disagree with those who say the Legislature hasn’t done anything this yr on #MAEdu funding. The MA House & @MA_Senate deserve praise for making a down-payment on #FBRC’s low-income reforms in the budget – a notable step forward.
But that doesn’t erase the fact that, 4 years since the #FBRC roadmap, we have not gotten the job done yet on a durable solution to our nation-leading education disparities. #mapoli
