OK, so I'm caught up on the Arin Hanson controversy. Incoming fucking Twitter tirade. Brace yourselves for fucking impact, boyos.
I've watched most of the original video, and...well, like, it's not funny. At all. Sorry to disappoint. It's just "this genre sucks" when really all STA videos are is a combination of animation and vlogging.
The video comes across as *very* mean-spirited, so I actually agree with @egoraptor's opinion on the matter. It's just bashing for the sake of bashing. Which I'm sure is going to lead to a certain percentage of my fanbase going #canceltheboon before they even finish the thread.
You are the people I have good reason to call out. Are we really bashing someone for having a different opinion of a video's merits? I'll address the elephant in the room on that matter, but this is just low and you all should be ashamed of yourselves.
I'm aware that some people think that all I do is bash other people's videos, even though in almost every video I give recommendations for improvement and tend to point out what about the points presented are valid, so that's a completely invalid argument.
I'm of the opinion that if Arin Hanson were more well-known for critical content, the backlash against him for being critical would be *far* less severe, and this is based on everything I've seen; critics get more leeway to criticize, even when they're wrong. Yes, including me.
There's another issue at play here, and that's that Arin Hanson is going against the popular consensus on this video's quality, and it's part of the reason I feel the need to address, especially considering my history with such a herd mentality that I have actively fought against
In May of 2017, I made a video entitled "Why Samurai Jack's Ending Doesn't Make Sense", which initially got a ton of backlash. Ironically, more people came out to criticize the very thing I was critiquing within a month of my video, but at the time, that wasn't the consensus.
The consensus of the animation community was that the ending was amazing for basically little other reason than that it was the ending to Samurai Jack, a show that has long needed a proper conclusion. I took a critical eye to this in an area I happen to be an expert on, and...
Well, the response during the first month was overwhelmingly negative. Since then, it has balanced out to more of a 50/50 reception. Hell, Pan Pizza's video a few days later acknowledged almost the *exact* problem I was talking about but chose to ignore it.
My point here is that, although the hate I got is not on the level of the hate that @egoraptor is getting, that doesn't mean that it doesn't provide a blueprint for why this whole thing is shitty and stupid.
But, if you people want to continue hating, I can't stop you, so go right on ahead. At the end of the day, you're really just amplifying the opposition's message. In the words of Eric Bischoff, "controversy creates cash". And there's plenty of both to go around.
