As we get started on a new round of gun control debates, let me tell you the only thing that can make a difference in mass shootings is a repeal of the 2A. Most gun control bills are stupid and ineffective as long as the 2A is in place.
This won't earn me any friends, but I am moving closer to the gun control side. (Mainly bc I don't believe a civilian populace armed with AR-15s can defend itself from the govt in the 21st century).
So the benefits of the 2A are obsolete (imo) while we're still dealing with its drawbacks. The left has a point when they point out this doesn't happen with this frequency in other countries.
Still, being a squish on gun ownership, I acknowledge the 2A is there. It unambiguously protects a right to own guns. So the debate has to center around repealing it. Not more useless gun control bills that their own sponsors agree won't stop mass shootings.
If I believed the RKBA is the last guarantee against tyranny I might agree it's a worthy trade-off. Which most pro-2A advocates do.

I guess I'm still in the "don't resist arrest" camp. Even if I think cops act improperly afterwards.

This is similar to how feminists get upset when they hear advice on how to avoid dangerous situations.
I'm not saying mouthing off to a cop or resisting arrest means you deserve whatever happens next. Only that it's something you can control on your end to avoid making a bad situation worse.
If a cop is acting improperly, not explaining why you're under arrest, tell it to the judge. Getting into an argument with the cop is not the way to go.

In the past week Trump has gotten the Democratic party to circle the wagons around unpopular elements of their orbit.
You don't have to be a Trumper to see there's method to the madness in this.
Next week Trump will attack Louis Farrakhan and then things will get interesting.

Canada is just ahead of the curve. This is a preview of the fights that will eventually come to US.
It sounds crazy now, but so did the wedding cake controversy 10 years ago. During a time when the argument for gay marriage was that these things wouldn't happen.
This case will probably go away now that Yaniv's turned out to be a nut. In a way conservatives have been helped by the absurdity of the people bringing these cases to court (requesting a satanic dildo cake).

This *oaf* offers the following prescription, in light of the U.S. having had *251* mass shootings this year while the UK has had *zero*:

1) Get the mentally ill off their meds;
2) force women to stay at home; and
3) make children pray to Christ whether they're Christian or not.
1/ Every time the NRA comes in for criticism after a mass shooting it's because *the NRA is what distinguishes America from countries with no mass shootings*. It's not that (say) the UK handles mental illness differently, or has more stay-at-home moms, or has religion in schools.
2/ Any person who offers a diagnosis for why the U.S. has had 251 mass shootings this year but *doesn't*, in so doing, explain why countries identical to us in nearly every respect culture-wise have had *zero* mass shootings in 2019 needs to go right to Hell without passing Go.

I've been hearing a lot of resignation in people's voices and tweets, in the face of the latest tragedy at #PowaySynagogueShooting. People are giving up hope that we can ever bend the curve on our #gunviolence epidemic.

6 years ago, we watched those babies walk out of #SandyHook - & were torn apart, as a nation, by the memory of those who didn't make it.

Many of us had been told that we "couldn't" talk about guns.

But after Sandy Hook, many of us said "no more; we will not be silent."
A few bravely started talking and writing about why #gunviolence was a #publichealth issue. Those few, turned into a wave. The groundwork was slowly laid.

1995 Divorce referendum looked to be in the bag from advance polls but on the day was only narrowly carried, it appears major drop in Yes happened in last 10 days. Too long ago to say more but we can say a whole lot more about Marriage Equality..
Marriage Equality also saw sharp drop in last 10 days, there were 4 polls published a weekend before by the same range of companies polling this time around - table shows each poll and then actual result first for raw data, then with Don't Knows excluded..

Tried and failed to make a video about mass shootings for this week on Vlogbrothers. I just can't. But here's a thread:
When things happen that don't fit into our stories of the world, we want them explained. And if they can't be easily explained with our current worldview, we have to shift that worldview. And, in doing so, the world as we imagine it becomes worse.
I've heard people ask why we spend so much time talking about mass shootings when they're not a huge slice of gun violence...this is why. They don’t fit in with our story, we don’t understand how they could happen, and so we have to shift how we imagine the world.

When I wrote "The Skies Belong to Us," a book about the hijacking epidemic of the '60s/'70s, mass shootings were very much on my mind. (1/x)
After the first four American hijackings occurred in 1961, the Senate held a hearing about the crisis. FAA chief Najeeb Halaby testified.
A senator asked Halaby whether it might make sense to check passengers for weapons. There was ZERO airport security at that point.
