I spent a few hours Sunday at a quinceañera expo in Houston for an upcoming column. This may seem to have nothing to do with #elpaso but bear with me.
It was, of course, extravagant with a rainbow of intricately beaded dresses with cascading ruffles and impossibly big skirts.
There was loud merengue and reggaeton, people dancing in the aisles and on stage. And lots of families. Doting Latino parents beaming at their beautiful daughters
Many were scared. The shooting in El Paso and the current anti-immigrant rhetoric made them feel as if there is a target on the back of every Latino.
But what struck me was not the fear. It was the pride. They were proud of Latino culture, traditions and the strength of family. No shooting or political bile will take that from them.
As I soaked in the scene. I was sad for the attacks on this community, my community. But I was also proud of my Latinx culture, of our resiliency. For mi gente. Maybe that strength is what scares white supremacists. No matter. They won’t win. #ElPasoStrong
