I have purchased lots of birthday gifts for toddlers lately. I mostly gift children’s books featuring protagonists of color, typically girls of color. This came up after a (white) parent said her son almost never receives books featuring female and/or non-white protagonists.
Patriarchy means little boys aren’t gifted books about little girls and so don’t have to learn to value or empathize with a different gender’s perspective.

I figured since I’m becoming a toddler book connoisseur these days, I might as well keep curating this list. Hope you all enjoy!
Consider purchasing these books, or finding them in your local library, for the children in your lives. Consider doing this for kids of colour, and also for the white kids you know. Consider books about non-boys for the little boys in your life. Diversify bookshelves everywhere.
(Also, of course, if you’re planning to buy these books, consider buying them through a local small business bookstore, especially if it’s owned by POC, rather than buying from Amazon. I only provide Amazon links for more info, not as an endorsement as a bookseller.)
A note on what I’m selecting for this list: I list books with a non-white (often female) protagonist. And, I’m also selecting books that I think are well-written, have a positive age-appropriate message/lesson for child development, and from experience that toddlers like reading.

This thread is required reading. Just adding and emphasizing that a favorite target of MRAzns is Asian American feminism precisely because of the line of flawed thinking outlined here by @NoTotally.

Not only does @NoTotally accurately point out how Asian American women are targeted by MRAzns, it’s worth further pulling back the veil: MRAzns reserve particular ire for AsAm feminists.

I dunno who the eff this is, but fuck you — that’s traditional hot pot which 1) is part of my cultural heritage, and 2) can be made vegan if one so desires.

Calling it leftover dishwater is the height of ignorance and cultural arrogance.
Incidentally, hot pot and other forms of slow-cooked stews historically emerge as a mainstay of cooking among impoverished peoples who combine whatever’s lying around to stretch ingredients while making a flavorful and hearty broth.
Chinese hot pot is traditionally described as having its origins among poor Chinese farmers who developed hot pot as a way to feed families during cold winters. European pottage has a similar history. Picking on these stews as “gross-looking” feels a lot like class privilege.

I have lots of thoughts but first: given the tone of this op-ed whether @nytimes plans to run a similar opinion from the three young people that Patel singled out as the villains?
Because Patel’s argument in this op-ed is basically: “College students aren’t all close-minded oversensitive snowflakes, bt these 3 specific students are. Fuck them.”

Given online harassment Patel’s supporters have already directed towards these students, this is srsly disturbed

I had no choice of "color" I was born this is me. poverty was my upbringing. My Mom , Aunts, Grandparents taught me to respect, fo be thankful, say please ,thank you. Not to lie, not steal, not to tease or call names.
I got "woppins" lots of woppins..

I can say who I turned out to be today is from what I learned by age 10 ( the hard way) .

As poor as We were, Single Mom three kids. The biggest thing I learned from my family. Is to never take pitty, to always be proud of what we have.
To never place yourself below anyone because your shoes have holes. Or come from second time around store. Usually the school bus driver would have the school donate me cloths and shoes. To stop the teasing. It would make Momma cry. I never let that bother me.

We honored Doris Raye Jennings Brewer & her twin Doris Faye Jennings Alston who tried to enroll in the white school in Hearne, TX in 1947. The Black school was a WWII barracks for German prisoners of war held up by old tires. Thurgood Marshall represented the Jennings. #BrownvBd
Our final honoree today was Leona Tate. In 1960 she & two other Black girls (age 6)desegregated McDonough School 19. Every white parent withdrew their children from the school. The three girls (who remain friends) attended the school as the only pupils for 2 years. #BrownvBoard
Today the Leona Tate Foundation in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward owns the old McDonough School 19 bldg which they are turning into a civil rights museum. Learn more about the Leona Tate Foundation here leonatatefoundation.org.

Sound familiar? The inspiration is a noble one, and I couldn’t be more excited about the work being produced these days by writers from marginalized communities. It’s a challenging, tumultous, and EXCITING time in the world of children’s books. 2/9
When I hear something like the above, I can certainly relate. There were so few books featuring Asian or Asian-American characters when I was growing up in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Been hoping to do the MKO Abiola/June 12 thread as promised before now but events are sometimes beyond one’s control. Seeing as tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of that date, I’m sure it is definitely a good time to do it.

And so, here goes: a Thread on MKO Abiola and June 12.
It is difficult to separate MKO Abiola from the story of June 12 and the June 12 struggle because as Gani pointed out back then, Abiola was the symbol of the mandate of Nigerians and his imprisonment became the rallying point of the struggle.

And MKO Abiola was a complicated man
Even more interesting, the June 12 story itself is a most complicated one with many sides but mainly two - the political and the ethnic; and two other ones - the activism around it and on a lesser scale, the family involvement.

The common thread though is Abiola himself.
