Meeting yesterday with hospital staff that treated victims in the El Paso shooting, Donald Trump boasts of the size of his rally crowd in the city three months ago and belittles former El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke.
*The El Paso rally was in February, so it was six months ago, not three as Trump says.
You can certainly see why the White House would try to keep these condolence visits closed to the press. It's not because they want to avoid a photo op (since they send out their photos anyway), it's that the president just isn't very good at this.
There are lots examples of Trump tripping on the "consoler in chief" role, but one I'm thinking about now is the private call to wife of the slain US solider in Niger, where the widow said the president was insensitive bbc.com/news/world-us-…
