Could the Palace intervene in the arguments on Brexit? I have no inside info, but based on a few conversations, a short thread. Suppose that the PM breaches not the law, but a constitutional convention, eg by not resigning after losing a motion of no confidence, … @CER_EU /1
...even if an alternative govt can demonstrate that it commands a majority. The Palace would do everything possible to avoid becoming involved. The Queen likes to be a unifying figure and taking sides on Brexit would be divisive. /2
Her default position would be to follow the advice of the PM. But, if her advisers thought that the PM risked breaching a convention, they would gently nudge him, in an effort to prevent the breach. /3
Senior figures in Whitehall think that the absence of Sir Chris Geidt, HM's very experienced private secretary who left in 2017, and Sir Jeremy Heywood, the cabinet secretary who died last year, will make it harder for the Palace to navigate the looming constitutional crisis./END
