1/ We've all focused a lot on the rhetoric of racism coming from Trump. But his actions speak even more loudly. It's one thing 2 call immigrants "invaders." But when u treat them as such -- as less than human -- u can't be surprised when others decide they are worthy of death...
2/ The dehumanizing treatment is the far bigger problem, and our tolerance for it -- the threshold of acceptability -- has grown precisely bc the rhetoric was normalized. This is how the most horrific crimes in history begin...
3/ The notion that some people are disposable; that their children don't matter; that they "deserve" whatever happens to them; that we don't have to care...this is the path to terrorism both individual and by the state, and BOTH are in play right now...
4/ That there are supposedly respectable Republicans and conservatives who are appalled by this but will accept it for tax cuts and the likes of Biff Kavanaugh tells you a lot about the moral core of the American right. It does not exist...
5/ ...and it is not enough for them to say, "I don't like Trump but I can't vote for a Democrat bc 'both sides'." Bullshit. Sometimes you have to stand against the active perpetration of evil, deliberately pursued...
6/ I know you may disagree with the left about abortion or marriage equality or a number of things where you feel we are the "immoral ones." I think that's absurd but we can talk about that in a bit...and if you don't get your way on those things, it will be status quo...
7/ ...which is to say, things will continue to be just as "immoral" as you think to be already. Whatever...but if Trump wins, things will get worse re: the way desperate migrants are treated. Pluralism itself will be threatened. Decency mocked and trashed...
8/ Trumpism poses an existential threat 2 the core institutions of the nation & the principles 4 which we ostensibly stand. There's no coming back from that. There's no way 2 make any of the Democratic candidates = to this. If u are 1 of those decent conservatives U must say no..
9/ It's not enough for us to do it (on the left) because unless Trumpism itself is renounced, the politic of prejudice that it feeds upon will regroup under smarter management...
