The percent of Americans citing 'racism/race-relations' as the most important problem facing the country is higher over the past few years than at any point since 1980 (perhaps ever, but I still need to gather the data for the 60s-70s)
Kinda looks some of the NYT graphs I posted ;p
I should note that a number of researchers assembled and made available a 'most important problem' dataset that spans 1930s-2015. Problem is they aggregate each response by topic, so 'racism' is grouped under 'civil rights' with other non-racial issues (e.g. abortion)
And because I'm interested in the salience of racial issues, I had to spend many hours over the past few weeks building a disaggregated dataset (which I will make available to all once I'm done coding) :(
By party (1992=LA riots btw)
Here's also the series for immigration (1994= proposition 187)
By party
Correlates reasonably well with one of the NYT indexes I created
