It's often not possible to have a close relationship with the photographer reporters work with, but when it is, it yields better work. In April @MarieDennise & I profiled this cross-border El Paso family & little Memo's baseball team in Ciudad Juarez.

@MarieDennise We spent two days with them as they talked about how President Trump's threat of shuttering the border has impacted their lives.
@MarieDennise Their commutes between families in El Paso and Juarez had grown to hours compared to what once was just 30 minutes.
@MarieDennise Last week when we were in El Paso covering the horrific Walmart shooting, we found out they were among the first victims injured. They were raising money for their 10-year-old daughter Karina's soccer team. Both the dad, Memo, & mom, Jessica, were shot. tinyurl.com/y5e8hlss
@MarieDennise .@MarieDennise drove while I looked up phone numbers and addresses, she hustled in the +100 degree sun at rallies, sat with me for hours during interviews that yielded no photos; together we stressed and mourned.
Relatives who didn’t want to talk or be photographed said she felt like family because they could see how much of her heart she poured into it. It’s reflected in her work.
