After spending two weeks in Kashmir and my travels across the region here is what I could gather. Article 370 is an extremely emotional issue with the people. Most are still confused on what impact it will have in future
An old man in Downtown, Srinagar a Hurriyat bastion said it was a pride for Kashmiris. Removal won’t have any impact on daily lives of Kashmiris . There are many voices like this but still there is anger. Situation far from normal as the government might want to claim
Many say Article 370 never benefited them and neither will the removal change anything. However, they don’t want to say this on camera. There are few voices who feel things will be better but again don’t want to say this on camera or be quoted.
Big scare for the administration is the growing discontentment and anger in police constabulary. This will be big challenge in the coming months
Then there are many who say militancy will get a push, Hurriyat will get a chance to revive. There is apprehension that there will be a big backlash once the security clampdown is relaxed. But there is again no real reasoning for it, but a lot of conjecturing
Big trust deficit when it comes to “Indian Media” that people consider anti Kashmiri and not representing facts.
And the big question for how long will political leaders including @OmarAbdullah and @MehboobaMufti along with several others be in custody
In mainland Kashmir there is little talk of representing voices of backward communities like Gujjars, Bakarwal living in forward areas bordering PoK. They speak a different language, have a different identity. They too are confused whether removal of Article 370 will change this
There is immense anger on the timing of the decision. The tourist season was hit badly impacting the lives of several who make big earnings till October as tourists come in. Also a forced muted Eid celebration amid zero connectivity has added to the bitterness
And frankly, I am also confused on the impact of abrogation of Article 370. Hope our future generations get the right answers when they read History on the subject
