To be clear, this is a lie. It's a narrative of betrayal that was invented by eurosceptics around the time of Maastricht and propagated by media personalities ever since as a cynical campaign tool
Note there are actually two variants of this

1: it was always political and we were lied to
2: it used to be only economic and then became political by subterfuge

To date, I've never noticed eurosceptics agree which of these lies is actually the definitive line to take
The conflict does show though how weak their position is and how difficult it is to get away from the truth of the matter: it was political from the start and people were told (and indeed could have seen even without being told)
