Doing more speaking gigs than ever before, it's interesting to see the differences in what you have to do for reimbursement between public and private institutions. "Accountability" in public spaces a much more onerous experience for all.
Private institutions tend to have the check waiting for you when you arrive. Submitting travel receipts and filling out forms also tends to be less burdensome, a W-9 and that's it.
For a public I've had to fill out up to three "outside vendor" forms, and there's always at least one in addition to the W-9. Publics want my driver's license, even proof of citizenship. This is not the fault of the institutions. This stuff is imposed from above.
I'm sort of amazed at the resiliency of the staffers who must navigate these hoops or help people like me navigate them. It must be a daily, even hourly frustration.
Surely someone has done a study on the cost to productivity of these oversight apparatuses in public institutions. So much time spent on hoop jumping and redundancies to prove you deserve the money.
