Late to this one by @jbouie, but it really is striking how often conservatives respond to proposals for voting rights, D.C. statehood, and election security with the bizarre non-sequitur rebuttal "We're a republic, not a democracy!" nytimes.com/2019/08/27/opi…
Bouie's last paragraph sums up what's going on here. The people who use this line are against both democracy *and* representation. They know the country is getting more diverse and more unequal, and their goal is to entrench power in the handy of the white wealthy few.
