In case anyone is curious how "both sides" narratives on the part of the state or city government work out for local organizers...This week, in their "investigation relating to" anti-fascist protests on August 17th, local police and prosecutors have:
1. Upping the charges facing Alex Dial (aka "Beta Cuck 4 Lyfe") from Attempted Assault II to Assault II (a Measure 11 crime) the day before his hearing, raising his bail amount to $250,000. Unable to post $25,000 bond, he was taken into custody at his hearing this afternoon.
[Dial's charges appear to stem from an altercation caught on video in which he physically defends another protester who is being assaulted by the American Guard, including one man who attempted to hit Dial's fellow protester over the head with a hammer.]
2. Arrested an established left organizer of color in town and used a search warrant to justify turning his entire house (virtually every room) upside down. He has been charged with felony riot, along with Dial, but is currently out on bail.
3. Arrested a young woman for a second time in Tigard who was initially violently arrested (but later released) on August 17th after spitting on the sidewalk in the vicinity of a van of cops. This time, she was cited for disorderly conduct and then released.
It's relevant to also include that Dial isn't the only individual currently being held in police custody--possibly for months, pending exorbitant bail--because the police and DA have chosen to charge them with crimes that fall under Measure 11...
Gage Halupowski has been in jail for two months already since the anti-fascist protest in Portland on 6/29, with his bail also set at around $250,000, also on charges of Assault II (among other minor charges). His next hearing date, like Dial's, is not until November.
In the eyes of the Police and the Mayor's office, community members defending themselves against attacks from the far right (or just walking down the street without paying due deference to riot cops) is just as, or more, worthy of prosecution as being an actual violent fascist.
UPDATE: This is the list of witnesses who testified before the Grand Jury that indicted Alexander Dial and four other people for felony riot last week. Notice any familiar names, y'all?
Li, LeCarno, Hergert, and Jones all appear to be police officers. Haley Adams is a white nationalist. Russell Schultz is a Proud Boy. Reggie Axtell first got famous for threatening the life of the mayor on live video.
The true essence of the "both sides" argument in the context of the legal system: "Fascists are as reliable a source of information about the actions of anti-fascists as anti-fascists are a source of information about fascists."
Also, folks should probably sit for a while with the reality that the police are trying to put organizers and community members--people who put their bodies on the line to stand against fascism--in jail for allegedly hitting the windows of Russell's godforsaken Proud Boy bus.
This video is from the day after Haley, Russell, and Reggie testified in front of that grand jury. Joey's own felony riot charge--for inciting an attack against a community event that left a woman's vertebrae fractured--seems to come with a couple perks.
