I spent several hours for work installing all of the new Japanese payment apps, and my impression is that it the next generation of Japanese-speaking UX specialists will create billions of dollars of enterprise value if listened to.
To be fair, the apps are a lot better than they would have been 5 to 10 years ago, but core onboarding flows had a lot of “oh no you’re kidding me” moments (and not just around playing my favorite game “Figure out which version of my name the app will actually accept.”)
Favorite feature I’ve seen so far: PayPay lets you “skin” the core screen of the wallet, which you’ll be showing clerks at e.g. convenience stores and possibly have friends fee, so you can pick a background that speaks to you (from approved choices).
I’d show you an example but the bar codes on it would be a live payments credential for next five minutes so... take my word for it.
