If you want to know why people are fiercely critical of venture capital, one good reason is because this kind of lunacy is taken seriously. Sheer goddamn foolishness like this thread is seen as Bold Truth Telling. If it were just one bad set of tweets? Whatever. It’s not.
And if you (rightly!) laugh at this, you’ll be decried as Silencing The Millionaires, vilified as equivalent to the white supremacist mobs that plague online conversation. That’s if you’re lucky; underrepresented & less powerful people in tech simply get blacklisted for critique.
The power of the money is so corrupting, though. Who can afford to opt out of complicity in this kind of absurdity, while still trying to work in tech?
Yes, a lot of that thread is exaggeration or performance, but balancing on the edge of being in on the joke has been part of the strategy of normalizing toxic or destructive behaviors for years. “It’s just a joke” is the shield of any number of people who aren’t kidding at all.
