Ashamed of the medium to which I gave several yrs of my career &life.
The way TV News is covering #1MonthOfKashmirShutdown is a total disservice to the nations& its people
No bigger lie than saying ‘everything is normal &nice’ in Kashmir.
I have returned 4 days ago from Kashmir++
And there’s nothing that can b categorised as ‘normal’.
Filed 4 detailed video reports @thewire_in so far to express the same. But it is not even half of what I witnessed during my stay in Kashmir.
99.99% people are scared for their lives & wouldn’t speak on camera for anything+
There’s no official curfew in the valley ( only section 144) but people are living in self-imposed restrictions on themselves.
Downtown is totally shut, only some shops in uptown area wud open for a few hours.
This is exactly when News cameras take shots&show you the ‘normalcy’

While TV channels are showing children in uniform on their way to school, till August 29, no child had attended any school in Srinagar. Director of education was asked several times by journalists to name at least one school where one child had attended it. He had no answers.

People are coming from areas as far as 40-50 km, after walking for several kilometres and spending an entire day to be able to make just one phone call to tell a relative or a business client that they are alive.
Watch it here-

+
Most young Kashmiri men ( this includes some journalists as well) don’t sleep at their homes for the fear of getting ‘picked up’ at night.
Some take shelter in mosques, friends houses or places where they aren’t supposed to be found.
+
Most Kashmiris are terribly apprehensive of the day when restrictions will be lifted.
A lot of them don’t see any future for themselves or their children in the state anymore.
Those with resources &option of leaving the state are making up their mind to shift to ‘safer’ countries
