“The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth and truth be defamed as a lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world… is being destroyed.” - Hannah Arendt
Of all the articles written on Trump’s sharpie-altered hurricane map, how many will use the word “authoritarian”?

This isn’t just about his ego.
“Saying something obviously untrue, and making your subordinates repeat it with a straight face in their own voice, is a particularly startling display of power over them. It’s something that was endemic to totalitarianism.” - @jtlevy
@jtlevy This. And it would be helpful if this kind of discussion wasn’t limited to twitter and the occasional opinion piece. “There’s an authoritarian in the WH” is important news and should be treated that way by the press.
@jtlevy I just don’t get how you can write an article about a leader “attempting to bend time”, ranting about fake news, and forcing everyone around him to prop up the lie - and not use the word “authoritarian”. It’s negligence.

@jtlevy The mainstream press reports on the constant lying, corruption and sycophancy. They never put these items into the larger context, an authoritarian waging war on democracy. One of the biggest news stories in our history, relegated (at best) to the opinion section.
@jtlevy After you read a hundred news articles that accurately report on the trees without ever naming the forest, they stop seeming brave. They start seeming cowardly. Complicit.
