Oooh boy.

I have a separate but related rant.

Human beings are fucking MEANT to have villages. We're meant to see the same people every day or almost every day. To have that regularity, familiarity, stability.

Where do most people get that now? Work.
1950s apple-pie capitalism did its best to isolate people in suburbs, to move them away from their parents, to make them dependent on corporations for getting their needs met, and replaced their village with their coworkers.
I've joked that working in the game industry is basically constantly trying to get your band back together, but that joke is touching on why the layoff cycle is so traumatic, even if you can handle it financially, why there's survivor's guilt around layoffs, etc.
Losing your job is what getting exiled from your village was 1000 years ago. It's losing that stability of seeing the same people every day. It's SUPER hard to get the same sort of relationships purely socially.
Everything is designed to make you not just *financially* dependent on your employer, but *emotionally* dependent.

It's why "family" rhetoric in workplaces ends up being so seductive and effective--and toxic and manipulative.
