I’m glad Fox News keeps pulling out bits & pieces of my speech to the DNC to prove my point that they can’t answer a moral critique do they just yell “socialism!”
They are so scared of real theologians & evangelicals who can challenge their misappropriation of morality & faith in public. Here are some examples of things that were also in the speech that they fear ppl will hear.
When 62 million working people who make less than a living wage can’t afford enough food to feed their families, their children’s empty stomachs don’t growl black or white; they growl hungry.
For too long, faith has been hijacked by those who say abortion and sexuality are the only moral issues.
They tell religious people to vote their pro-life/pro-family values, then they use their political power to pass policies that keep families in poverty, separate families at the border, keep families from getting healthcare and endanger the life of the planet itself.
I’m from the South where many politicians still play the division and lies of racism. They enable racism. The South is also the native home of poverty.
In the 13 former Confederate states
• 52.7 million people are poor or low-income
• 24.4 million white people are poor and low income
• 28.2 million people of color are poor and low income
• 13.3 million people in total are uninsured
The number of poor people in those 13 states is more than 1/3 of the total number of poor people in the country. The number of poor whites in those 13 states is also more than 1/3 of total poor whites in the country.
The same politicians who use race to divide, after they get elected through racist voter suppression, they use their power to block living wages & health care that affects mostly white ppl.
When we embrace moral language, we must ask, Does our policy care for the least of these? Does it lift up those who are most marginalized and dejected in our society? Does it establish justice? That’s a moral question.
If someone calls it socialism, then we must compel them to acknowledge that the Bible promotes socialism. Because Jesus offered free healthcare to everyone, and he never charged a leper a co-pay.
The Bible says God makes it to rain on the just and the unjust alike. And the very Constitution our elected leaders swear to uphold commits to promote the general welfare. So why in the world are we so afraid of being accused of supporting welfare?
We can’t be scared of labels. This current administration is practicing socialism to corporations and the greedy through tax cuts, deregulation and economic incentives. And then they refuse to bail out communities and human beings.
We need political leaders who will stand up and say that helping the people who need it most is a moral issue. This is not about being far left or far right. How dare any one say that blocking living wages is right? That denying people access to healthcare is right?
Some things are not left vs right, but right vs wrong. A moral message can energize ppl who feel left out & looked over by the whole framing of the system as it is. And we have seen how it can bring together those folks who’ve been pitted vs one another, especially in the South.
