Loath as I am to say "I told you so", well ... I told you so.
The years I spent railing against PFI were the most frustrating of my life. The case against it was so clear, but no one in government would listen. Now we are picking up the bill. theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
The toxic PFI legacy Blair and Brown have left us is arguably a greater threat to public services than all the terrible impacts of Tory austerity. Hospitals, schools, prisons and other services are now collapsing under the weight of payments they must make to private operators.
The Iraq War was the worst thing Blair and Brown did. But the Private Finance Initiative comes second. It allowed them to fudge the figures on public borrowing and keep the corporations and the billionaire press onside. But it has saddled public services with unapayable debts.
This is one of the reasons why a complete break from New Labour's legacy was necessary. Its policies were economically and politically unsustainable. They were robbing the future to support the present. @johnmcdonnellMP's economics are far more responsible.
In both financial and ecological terms, Conservative and Blairite economics are pyramid schemes. To create the appearance of current economic health, they load the future with unpayable financial and environmental debts.
