Overnight, two other highly credible voices came out with strongly worded comments: Joe Friday, former director of NWS and Bill Read, former NHC director.
Please listen to all these people who have 100 years of combined government experience (or more). Note that I am speaking in my capacity as Union Steward of NHC. One day I might write more about this ridiculous week, but only if the situation deteriorates further.

Are you freaking kidding me- March??? This would sacrifice the whole offseason hurricane preparedness program for our country and decimate our hurricane modeling. This is no joke- no question this shutdown is making our country less prepared for the 2019 season and beyond.
I wrote a long thread last week about the effects here:
You can add losing both the Gulf Coast and Caribbean Hurricane Awareness Tours. No Interdepartmental or National Hurricane Conference or any FEMA courses, even for a day. Training our WMO and NWS partners- gone. There is a 100% chance it will hurt hurricane readiness

Hard to believe, but with the House adjourned until next week, the shutdown will almost certainly extend into a second month. Here’s a recap thread as Union Steward of NHC of what we have lost so far, and what else is on the chopping block:
The National #AMS2019 conference has come and gone. All the potential scientific gains, interactions, new ideas- not this year. I probably regret losing the interactions with the hundreds of student attendees the most- a real missed chance for future inspiration and talent.
The first week of the @FEMA #hurricane preparedness classes is cancelled. The next one is likely to be postponed as well. This class is for decision makers who usually don’t know a lot of meteorology to help them understand what NHC/NWS products can and can’t do for them..

Here’s an update now that we are late into the third week of the shutdown- almost everything in that thread has come to pass with more negative things to come. Thread below 👇
Basically all of the federal government @noaa @nasa employees have missed the @ametsoc conference this week. A few scattered contractors were able to attend, but overall a lost opportunity to share ideas, present work and inspire the next class of students.
The first week of intensive hurricane training classes (cohosted with @fema) for emergency management officials/ decision makers is cancelled. As the flagship course for training non-meteorologists how to use NHC/NWS/FEMA products- its absence will hurt US hurricane preparedness
