@lisanandy @martinwolf_ I think any road to Brexit compromise would though require a totally different approach from Government than what we have seen for 3 years - being more open, discussing the options with more honesty, and properly scrutinising the deal on the table

Should have been 'no' realistic compromise proposals to date. But here's the thing - negotiations can tackle problems, produce compromises. But only if entered in good faith, with specificity, with flexibility.

Such an approach has not by and large suited UK politicians.
I proposed improvements to the Brexit deal back in January. I stand by them. But they were too remain-y for Brexiteers and too leave-y for remainers. A country can't successfully negotiate externally faced with such a domestic split linkedin.com/pulse/brexit-d…

Back to trying to decode Brexit talks. Suddenly the talk is of a UK proposal based around an all-Ireland SPS (food products basically) zone which the UK will present to the EU at the European Council on Oct 17. For now there seem few grounds for optimism 1/
The EU's checks on animals / food products are far more exacting than in any other area, thus the ERG associated Alternative Arrangements Commission experts struggled to even put forward a solution without some all-island commonality. This seems to what the UK Gov proposes 2/
This proposal actually offers no guarantee of no border infrastructure, as at any time Northern Ireland can diverge, requiring border checks if the Republic chooses not to diverge from the EU as will be the case. Not sensible, not going to be acceptable 3/

UK and South Korea have agreed to UK goods incorporating EU inputs to continue gaining preferential treatment for 3 years, in return for which talks on a new trade agreement must start within 2 years. Given the scale of the UK's future trade policy challenge is that sensible?
When we leave the EU the current government have committed to trade talks with the US, Australia, and New Zealand. There will obviously be pressure for EU talks. There are EU agreements not rolled over with Japan and Canada. Now add South Korea. That isn't all deliverable.
Underlying problem remains - we don't know what we want from trade agreements. Therefore we can't say why the US or Japan, or South Korea or whoever. Add no proper Parliamentary scrutiny process, and you cannot say UK trade policy is Brexit ready.

The Brexit vote was against our London-centric system. So if there's an economic hit because of a Brexit London voted against, Westminster would make sure the London Banking sector survived but everywhere else...
Many of the problems that pushed people to vote Brexit had nothing to do with the EU. One of those problems was the government choosing to protect the banks who caused the crash with bailouts while ordinary people just got austerity.
The rich took irresponsible risks with the country's future, but they were protected either by moving their money away or by the government and it was those with least who suffered the most.

Jaguar Land Rover recently agreed 2 build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata, same company who trashed our steel industry & emptied workers pension funds.
