I’ve been captivated by British democracy since I was a kid. But sometimes I struggle to defend it.
Nurses, teachers, social workers, businessmen and women work all their lives and most are never recognised. I’m not sure it does much good for the honours system that outgoing prime ministers choose to overwhelmingly reward their mates in their country’s name and not them.
To many people it’s the worst example of the rich and powerful looking after their own. Because, well, it is.
