As I’ve been saying for weeks, this is why Johnson’s strategy of resting his hopes on northern/midlands Labour leave voters is highly risky.

Sometimes Tory commentators talk of these voters as if their behaviour is two dimensional: easy to convert en masse just because of Brexit, whilst apparently confident that their own historic voters are more sophisticated...
... always know what its in their interests and will stick with them no matter what. They’re relying on the stickiness of their own tribalism whilst assuming that of Labour’s (and by extension that generated against them) is flimsy. It’s odd.
That’s not to say that a proportion of these voters won’t abandon Labour- there is a slow realignment taking place in these seats away from the party- just that they’re unlikely to do it for the Tories and certainly not in one go. About that Nigel Farage is absolutely right.
Basically, it’s unlikely these voters will just vote for the Tories in sufficient numbers after decades of acrimony just because you repeat Brexit a thousand times. To many of them it just would never occur that it would even be an option.
As the brilliant @JenWilliamsMEN says, the assumption that they all will is laced with more than a hint of snobbery.
The irony is those who advocate this strategy are all too quick to chastise others for not really “understanding” the “real” country. The fact so many seem so convinced this is a viable strategy for the next election tells me it is they who don’t understand these places at all.
