There are problems with this kind of analysis. The first is that we just don't know if they apply to the US, or if our institutions are more robust. There's only one way to know, which is to wait to see. The second is that warning of it seems futile.
I don't think Americans generally believe these things can happen. In the main, they don't see the experiences of other countries as relevant to the US, no matter how similar they look to a small subgroup of Americans who've seen this cascade happen elsewhere.
So when you say, "Look what happened in Hungary," generally the response is, "Hungary? Why does that matter?"
