The most disturbing #Windrush case I encountered:
Joycelyn John, arrived in the UK aged 4, worked as a chambermaid at the Ritz, was forced 50 years later into self-deportation back to Grenada, when Home Office branded her an illegal immigrant.

Still find it hard to understand why officials thought it was a sensible idea to fly her to an island on the other side of the world, where she had almost no ties, and dump her there alone.

Gove says no one has responded with more grace and commitment (or something like that) to #windrush than Amber - but that is not true. Less than a fortnight ago she had done nothing at all (at least publicly) to show this was an issue she was worried about
A fortnight ago the guardian had already published many detailed accounts of people made homeless, sent to detention centres, sacked from jobs, unable to visit dying parents, refused benefits, asked to pay for NHS treatment - I think around 10 already printed
I’m sure Rudd must have been very busy think about Brexit - and that’s part of the problem. She may not have been reading the Guardian that regularly. But what about her staff? Couldn’t they have flagged it as important?

1/ On the Immigration Bill committee the immigration minister @carolinenokes shows that she does not understand differing immigration systems. When asked about #Windrush & EU Settled Status she is saying that declaratory system does not work. This is wrong...
2/ Windrush was not about a choice of people needing to apply for rights (constitutive system) or were entitled automatically by law (declaratory system). It was a problem of not having documentation to prove status. A declaratory system can still issue documents.
3/ @Stuart_McDonald points exactly this out to @carolinenokes. The lack of documentation was the issue not the way people obtained the new status.

Reading report on the handling of #Windrush makes it even clearer to me how dire the situation is for EU citizens now too. If settled status goes ahead as planned, there will be thousands more cases just like Windrush among EU citizens in future too. nao.org.uk/report/handlin… 1/
Some of the problems identified in the #Windrush report are already happening for EU citizens with respect to settled status now too — eg the failure to proactively inform / identify vulnerable groups etc. 2/
In the end it is sickening that while all of this began to emerge and continues to demonstrate the true vileness of the #HostileEnvironment, May and HO are actively putting in place a policy that will replicate the #Windrush crisis on an altogether unprecedented scale. 3/

This all started because the #MetPolice & #LBRUT couldn't do their day jobs properly & decided to take the law into their own hands. It started as a small cover up 12 years ago but has turned into British State Persecution.

My company was raided. It should have been a straightforward matter. But the #MetPolice & #LBRUT forgot to seize my computer & came back to do a 2nd raid. The search warrant didn't permit a second entry, however, #LBRUT entered unlawfully

Complaints were then made to my MP #VinceCable. He liaised with the #Metpolice & #LBRUT. And then weeks later, the search warrant was completely changed & was passed off as the search warrant executed on the day of the raids.

1/ #Windrush scandal shows that #citizensrights granted 47 years ago to thousands of immigrants can't be taken for granted. The main victims are those who came here as children before 1971 & who've lived here undisturbed until the introduction of the hostile environment in 2012
2/ there are strong parallels here with ca 727k EU children living in the UK. In a recent report @MigObs has identified children as one of the groups most likely to fall through the net when it comes to applying for and securing Settled Status

3/ We might not have to wait 47 years to see the effect of the hostile environment coming to bite those young EU citizens. What will happen to a 2 year old missed by the Settled Status system now when they want to enter the job market in 16 years when they turn 18?
