Jeff Bezos, who just cut the medical benefits of 1900 Whole Foods workers, is also a member of Business Roundtable (@roundtablepnw) an organization of ~200 CEOs that recently released this statement, entitled "Our Commitment." opportunity.businessroundtable.org/ourcommitment/
@roundtablepnw .@JeffBezos when you & 180 other @roundtablepnw CEOs said last month "not enough is being done for workers to adjust to the rapid pace of change in the economy," did you mean your decision today to cut medical for 1,900 @WholeFoods workers? Is that your plan to help them adjust?

When white men like Kavanaugh lie, they're still telling a larger truth: not only will I get away with it, I will be rewarded. Things won't really change until _that_ does.
Tweets aside, the NYT story does an excellent job of putting Kavanaugh's behavior in a larger context of aggression by the wealthy toward the "insufficiently rich." Our culture doesn't just consider the kind of thing Kavanaugh did a rite of passage. It's also a display of status.
Deborah Ramirez's ability to talk about the "good to come" is beyond moving to me. It makes me feel like working hard to help make sure her prediction comes true.

Do you like working in a society where, if you speak back for better conditions, your employer can say, “We will deny life needed medicine & kill you, your spouse & your children”?
Whole Foods—owned by literally the richest man on the Earth—is cutting health insurance for its workers.

Do you like living in a society where a CEO can literally have more money than any of the other 7 billion of us & STILL say to the workers, “No healthcare for you. Go die.”
When I was repped by UAW in two shops, I had good health insurance. Yet the necropolitical power—what Mbembe calls the right to decide who might live & who must die—is still NOT appropriate. Employers should NOT be able to issue a death decree to employees at moments of conflict.

Fact check: Amazon raised minimum wage at Whole Foods to $15/hour and now requires 30 hours of work/week instead of 20 hours to buy into health-care plan; this impacts less than 2% of Whole Foods workers. Amazon is also adding more than 30,000 permanent jobs in tech, corporate.
2. Since Amazon bought While Foods in 2017, Bezos put in place a series of price decreases while raising worker wages. Though forced to increase prices on some products earlier this year after suppliers complained about rising costs, Whole Foods slashed prices again last week.
3. Despite the trade war, fuel costs, and instituting higher minimum wage ($15/hour and all workers get 20% discount) Whole Foods prices are down 2.5% from last year, according to Morgan Stanley last week. Bezos appears fine with flat revenue growth. cnbc.com/2019/08/27/ama…

[1] The German submarine U-505 was the very first foreign navy vessel captured by the United States in WW2. It was June of 1944. It was the first vessel the US captured in nearly 100 years (last was 1840s).

[2] The U-505 is currently on display in Chicago

It was a very difficult capture - the captain left the boat in a a condition to sink to protect the German tech, but the US navy saved her
[3] The Germans did not believe their Enigma codes were compromised during the rest of WW2 because the capture of U-505 was kept a secret

But U-505 was critical to knowing how to break the German codes

Bezos seems intent on stressing the economic value Amazon creates for so many, including "560,000 employees, 2 million sellers, hundreds of thousands of authors, millions of AWS developers, and hundreds of millions of divinely discontent customers around the world"
Love this year's focus on high standards, especially regarding the importance of expectation on scope: "Second, you must have realistic expectations for how hard it should be (how much work it will take) to achieve that result – the scope." There are no shortcuts to great work.
