Martin's whole thread is worth reading. I don't disagree with any of it. All true! But you have a lot more agency to choose when and where to help.
It's like, management is a salad bar of tasks, and a senior IC can pick up a few of the tastiest or most needed along with their main dish.

Whereas to the manager, the salad bar *is* the entree. And they are responsible for each and every dish. (This metaphor kinda works, lol)
Also, with all the (overdue! much needed!) discussion of senior ICs who do a ton of people work, let's not forget that this doesn't describe every senior engineer, either.

There are many different archetypes, many ways to increase your impact and deliver outsize value to a team.
Pretty sure this has been on my list of blog posts to write for >3 years, sigh.

There are precious few things you can say categorically about all senior engineers. We need a better taxonomy, a richer set of terms and types. 🤔
