I thought that WalMart was _asking_ customers to not bring weapons to their stores.

I was not aware that they were prohibiting it, and prepared to ban gun-toting customers from all stores nationwide.

I'm all for it - just make sure customers know the consequences beforehand.
For other businesses thinking about following suit:

if it's phrased as a request or a suggestion, it implies it's a preference, not a rule.

Set customers' expectations appropriately for what will happen if they have weapons, and there will be less pushback and escalation.
You know what would be great?

Businesses should set up a national alliance and registry for RETAILERS to use to list those who are banned from their stores for carrying weapons.

Names + guns in a nationwide list? That should scare people into leaving their weapons at home 😈
