TECH FRIENDS!

There are connections between people/orgs in the whole #Brexit debacle that we just don't know about.

And they are hard to MAP.

So, we want people in tech to look at the best way to map them (e.g. LittleSis). Come to our meetup!

This will be an @TechForUK Project, and we’re agnostic about the mapping platforms. The main thing will be to make it open source and extendable by the tech and journalism community.

Yes the meet-up will be in London.
Given the scale of the enthusiastic response we will be extending the invite to remote attendees and also inviting people who sign up into a Slack to work collaboratively.

Astounding that media STILL reporting that 44% of Brits prefer a #NoDealBrexit when that was the “EXTREME scenario” option! In fact only 26% picked it, as against 37% who want a 2nd Ref & to REMAIN IN THE EU! Even in the extreme scenarios, 42% still preferred to remain! YouGov:
In the letter 25 Labour MPs (including frontbenchers) sent to Jeremy Corbyn urging him to agree a deal with Theresa May - and NOT request a second referendum, they MISINTERPRETED this YouGov poll to justify their position. But now we have a media narrative based on this crap!
If your MP has fallen for this false position, contact them via Hey-MP.uk & send them the results from Revoke.info (thanks @TechForUK) which will show them how many people in their constituency signed the #RevokeArticle50 petition, versus their majority!

A German entrepreneur I know who has 4 companies in the UK says Brexit is a disaster: “We have 4 Ltds and on the April 1st, if we do not merge the companies into German ones, then all the shareholders will become PERSONALLY liable for all loans.” European business is PULLING OUT!
He explained that the UK attracted many Germans to set up Ltd companies because the costs were drastically lower than in Germany. We are talking almost 1 in 4 German companies at one point were UK Ltds. But Brexit means, under German law, those UK companies are de-recognised...
... and become immediately, overnight recognised as private partnerships where the directors are *personally liable* for all assets and loans. So they are scrambling for the exit. We are talking tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of companies.

Thread: Several prominent people in tech (VCs etc) have *privately* thanked me for being so public about a #FinalSay / #PeoplesVote. They are v. worried about the future of the UK. Then again, one or two say I’ve damaged myself. “Stick to tech!”
Only 4 people (that I’ve counted) are actively pro-Brexit (I have a LOT of contacts so they are very much in the minority. Those who are against Brexit but remain quiet say they prefer not to “do politics”.
And yet they’d probably be the first to admit that we landed in this place because the Tech Industry did not do enough to *actively* defend democracy. Instead, it built products without thinking about how they might one day be weaponised against democracy.

At 10:30 today, the Supreme Court will sit *for 3 days*, with 11 Justices, on the matter of the prorogation appeals. Last time they did that was with Gina Miller's previous #Brexit case. The judiciary are wielding the big guns on this one. THREAD. 1/
Day 1: Couple of hours each for the plaintiffs in the Miller & Maugham/Cherry cases to put their arguments.
Day 2: Couple of hours each for the defendants (HMG & Advocate General, Scotland) to counter.
Day 3: "Oral interventions", 30 mins each. No Shami.

- Agree all-Ireland SPS, electricity and travel area...and then
- kick the other (customs VAT etc) into transition/trade talks. /2
Negotiability with EU?

- practically zero. Would require massive EU u-turn on 'fully open' border in Ireland, Single market integrity. And to throw Ireland under bus politically.

- A border is a border, even if set back. Tech/exemptions cannot deliver.

Couple of points on latest "outrages"
1) vote Tory in a GE - Vote for some undefined fantasy position between no deal & a great deal

Vote Labour - Vote for some undefined position between a great deal & remain via a referendum

Vote Lib Dem - Vote for Remain

2) if Lib Dems get a majority, it's a new, fresh democratic mandate for Remain that overrides the 2016 Ref

If Tories or Labour get a majority, it's not a mandate for anything that can be defined because they won based on an unknown - that great deal that hasn't been defined
3) If Lib Dems *don't* get a majority, there is no clear mandate and the only way to solve #Brexit is via a 2nd Referendum - this is Lib Dem policy

Only the Lib Dems could claim a mandate for anything on #Brexit following a GE, the other 2 parties could not

Brexit would make Metropolitan Elitism worse-

The Brexit vote was against our London-centric system. So if there's an economic hit because of a Brexit London voted against, Westminster would make sure the London Banking sector survived but everywhere else...
Many of the problems that pushed people to vote Brexit had nothing to do with the EU. One of those problems was the government choosing to protect the banks who caused the crash with bailouts while ordinary people just got austerity.
The rich took irresponsible risks with the country's future, but they were protected either by moving their money away or by the government and it was those with least who suffered the most.
