Tonight in NYC, @ewarren gave a speech where she called out the corruption of the fossil fuel industry, the gun industry and the healthcare industry. She said they had captured our political system. Guess what? I’ve got a paper on that.

@ewarren Along with @awh + @mmildenberger, I show that the more Congressional staff meet with and take money from the fossil fuel, gun and healthcare lobby, the worse job they do at estimating public support for climate action, gun control and Obamacare.

@ewarren @awh @mmildenberger .@ewarren's speech was very powerful. Finally we have politicians calling out the fossil fuel industry. I have waited 15 years to hear this kind of talk from our leaders. The fossil fuel era must end!

Thanks @NewYorker for publishing this terrible article by Jonathan Franzen which is so off base it would be laughable if it wasn’t so problematic. Love it when our most prominent outlets give voice to doomsday climate predictions that are wildly out of step with reality. THREAD.

That would mean 74% clean power in 2025, putting us ahead of schedule for full decarbonization by 2035, assuming nuclear plant license extensions. 2/

This is like saying “The tobacco industry could solve cigarette addiction” or “The plastic industry could solve plastic pollution.” It’s a fundamentally nonsensical notion, because the only way those industries can solve those problems is by going out of business. THREAD
The fossil fuel industry recognized this early on. By the 1980s, it realized global warming is primarily a fossil fuel problem, and it acknowledged that stopping it was an existential threat to the industry.
The only way to stop global warming was (and is) to stop putting fossil carbon into the air. The fossil fuel industry cannot survive under that condition. It knew and acknowledged this decades ago.

Fossil fuel companies have spent $1 billion since the Paris Agreement was signed on greenwashing their image.

Lamar Alexander has taken $1.2 million from them, and his "Ten Grand Challenges" look an awful lot like that industry's greenwash wishlist.
The biggest fossil fuel industry players are multinational corporations. Formal climate denial has been largely a US phenomena, and one they're very happy with. But on the world stage they've long had a different approach than funding junk science and crackpot deniers
Industry representatives have been crawling over UN climate talks for years mucking it up. Organizers in the US have shifted the Overton window away from old school climate denial and that's great! What the industry has lined up next isn't any better, and arguably more dangerous

When John Light investigated it it turned out that Trump didn’t declare open season on bird chopping out of a non specific rage against birds. It turns out that to help the fossil fuel industry have an easier time killing birds ... talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/wind-fa…
2/ it was convenient, helpful in a regulatory sense to also make it easier for wind farms to kill 🦅 🦅 🦅 🐦. Until this change wind farms had to take affirmative steps to avoid killing birds. It wasn’t enough to say “Dude, I didn’t tell the bird to run into the propeller.”
3/ You has to take some affirmative steps to avoid it. Now unless you are actually trying to make birds run into your fans it’s all good.
